The Chemistry

What's actually in that scent.

The aroma that distinguishes cypress is not decorative. Its warm, resinous scent comes from a terpene profile led by alpha-pinene and sabinene in Cupressus lusitanica. Those same aromatic compounds give the wood its character in closets, wardrobes, and interior paneling.

In enclosed spaces — closets, wardrobes, storage rooms — the aromatic compounds remain effective for approximately 5–10 years. Lightly sanding the surface refreshes the release. No spray, no chemical treatment, no annual schedule.

The species grows at elevations above 1,500m in Costa Rica's highlands. The slower growth rate at altitude produces denser, more uniform ring structure — contributing to the dimensional stability and workability that makes it a practical species for volume applications.

+43%Harder than western red cedar

43% higher Janka and roughly half again the bending strength of western red cedar, with a finer, more uniform texture. Rated for above-ground exterior and interior use — not ground contact.

5–10Years of aroma (enclosed)

The aromatic terpenes stay active in closets and wardrobes for years. A light sand refreshes the release.

~$1Per BF landed cost

CAFTA-DR 0% duty means the savings is built into the landed price. Volume fencing at premium-species quality without the premium-species margin squeeze.

Honest Application Guide

Where cypress excels. Where it doesn't.

Overselling a species costs you a callback. This is where Cupressus lusitanica genuinely performs — and where to specify something else.

Excels

  • Above-grade exterior fencing — volume residential and commercial
  • Walk-in closets and wardrobes — aromatic and dimensionally stable
  • Interior paneling and wall cladding
  • Pergola and porch framing (above grade, good drainage)
  • Storage rooms and cabinetry where aroma is a feature
  • Above-grade cladding with proper flashing and airspace

Use with care

  • Above-grade fencing without proper post caps and drainage design
  • Exterior applications in continuously wet or shaded microclimates
  • High-UV applications without an initial UV-stabilizing oil or finish

Not recommended

  • Ground contact — specify pressure-treated or a ground-contact-rated species
  • Marine or splash-zone environments — specify teak
  • Structural or load-bearing applications

Performance Properties

What makes it worth specifying.

No treatment schedule for above-grade use

Rated for above-ground exterior and interior use with no applied chemical — no annual treatment, no coating requirement. Specify pressure-treated or a ground-contact-rated species where the wood meets soil.

Dimensional stability and workability

Consistent ring structure from highland growing conditions. Takes nails, screws, and adhesives without splitting. Machines cleanly. Good for volume jobs where consistency across a run matters.

Aromatic performance in enclosed spaces

For closet and wardrobe applications: the cypress scent remains active for years in enclosed environments — a warm, aromatic alternative to cedar-lined storage.

CAFTA-DR economics

Western red cedar moved from ~$3/BF to ~$4/BF post-tariff. Cypress lands at competitive cost under CAFTA-DR 0% duty — 43% harder than western red cedar, a finer, more uniform texture, and no chemical-treatment burden for above-grade work.
